Tabernacle Block photos pêle-mêle

These photos were scanned in (some were taken) by Ephraim Hatch, architect and Provo East Stake resident who has graciously made them available for this website. Many more are planned including photos of old artifacts and momentos as the site grows.

Here is a picture of the completed Provo Tabernacle before the original tabernacle, whose spire is visible at the left of the picture, was demolished. Where that building stood, there is now a lush park today cornering on Center Street and University Avenue. The stack of the heating plant is visible also on the left. Even today, in 2003, the heating and cooling of this structure is handled in a little out-building (in the same location).

Later, in 1917 after more than 30 years in place, the central spire was removed because it was determined that it was too heavy for the structure of the building.

On 24 September 1909, twenty-seventh United States president William Howard Taft visited the finished Tabernacle and spoke from its pulpit. Present also were Senator Reed Smoot (stake president during the Tabernacle’s construction), Senator George Sutherland who would become a Supreme Court Justice. Both of these men were originally from Provo. Original picture by T. C. Larson, commercial photographer. In those days, church buildings were often used for other community purposes including the political.

Tabernacle event ticket photos These tickets were found underneath the main floor of the tabernacle by maintenance personnel and made available to me for scanning. The exact year of some is missing.
