Bishop John P. R. Johnson, with others, had originally opposed the central spire as being too stressful for the building. Thirty years later his wisdom was apparent and the difficult and dangerous project of taking it down was contracted out.

It would appear that the spire was first reduced to the platform atop the building first, then the platform was removed and the roof rebuilt and closed in in its place.
